The opening of Sadler’s Ordinary in 1648 marks the beginnings of the community. Marlborough was incorporated in 1803 with land from parts of three neighboring towns, taking its name from the city in Massachusetts by the same name. The original Sadler’s Ordinary eventually went out of business, and a new one built in 1970 remains in business to this day. Marlborough is now a middle-class suburban and rural community, housing such historic sites as the Marlborough Congregational Church and Marlborough Tavern. Salmon River State Forest covers the southwestern portion of the town.
